Book Review - Life, in Spite of Me by Kristen Jane Anderson

At 62 years old, staying up till 3:00 a.m. to finish a book I'd started at 11:00p.m. is no long in my repetoire of activities. This book was engaging enough and encouraging enough that I did so.

Surviving a suicide attempt left Kristen Anderson without her legs and she takes us on her journey to recover not only from the desire to commit suicide, but also from the physical trauma of losing her legs. She takes us along as she learns how to have a personal and deep relationship with Jesus, giving her (and us) hope for the future. She shows us the "God-sightings" along the way in the ways that He preserved her and showed her the way to have a worthwhile future.

While it was difficult to read of her trauma as well as that of her family, this book is a very hopeful and God-honoring book, not one that dwells on all the "woe-is-me" attitude that came and went throughout her journey. I am encouraged to look for God-sightings in my own life rather than focusing on the hard stuff and to trust Him more through them.

This would be a good, medium-length book to share with those suffering with depression and/or suicidal thoughts. Kristen started a ministry called Reaching You and she's on Facebook.
