The Art of Gentle Domesticity - Week 6

On Jenny's blog  this week, with her book study of The Gentle Art of Domesticity, the topic - COLOR - is near and dear to my heart. Jane Brockett really speaks my language in this area!

I have long said (and my kids are probably tired of hearing) that color and harmony make the world go 'round (I love to sing alto or tenor and trio harmony is my favorite). So on my first delve into the book a few years ago, I had made this note.

I do like splashes of bright color to brighten up the world and my kids are slowly getting used to (but still chuckle at) my desire to spray paint nearly everything. They have been warned not to stand still for too long lest they get painted, too.

So, when I wanted to brighten up my kitchen, of course I turned to fun colors and left the doors off some of the cupboards so that the colors could shine out.

Even the pantry shelves in an outer room got several coats of happiness.

My walls are white so that I can add the color splashes through borders, quilts, and other embellishments. My daughter who is an artist with a brush painted morning glories on several hallway doors for me.

And my embroideries draw attention and produce joy (to me at least) with bright colors.

Though I have not the knitting skills to make these gorgeous socks, my mother does and when she ended up with crazy bright socks that don't pretend to match, I took them and am happy to wear them as well as the pretty ones that do match.

At 58 years old, I'm getting a good running start on being an eccentric old lady. And with four cats, I can even qualify as a crazy cat lady!

Never be dull.

  1. Pops of colour can certainly make you happy cant it? I love your open kitchen shelves, but I am afraid my shelves are not always that tidy! I just posted a mural that I hung up in the garden over the weekend. I had no idea what the theme was going to be this week, but I think I hit it spot on!
